How can I utilize different sea creatures as a muse to explore human characteristics/behavior. The overall message behind this portfolio is to convey expressions, emotions, and demeanor we experience as humans through sea creatures. Sea creatures are one of the top mysteries of humanity, yet so is our emotional sides. For instance, as we learn new data on jellyfishes, so do we in discovering variants of “peace and serenity”. This comparison can be expressed through habitats and behavior of the sea creature that subjectively represent what individuals feel about a piece that relates to emotion.
The portfolio uses clay to take advantage in style, color, and realism to express a unique way to convey the intended emotion behind the animal. The Disgusted Impression piece had many challenges in reworking the clay to precisely capture both proper proportions and the intended expressions. There was a lot of experimentation with texture and color to show the ugly green and browns, and constant revisions on the color placement to grasp the uncomfortable dark rot of the tinted teeth. I tested cold finishes such as acrylic, crayon resist, mixed media to increase detail and depth within my work.
